answer one question...
what do you want to create?
The world of miniatures isn't just one world, it's many worlds, and it encompasses so many different hobbies, interests, and skill levels -- there has to be something for you here!
Dollhouses
Traditionally, when one thinks of miniatures the immediate thought is "dollhouse." Which is certainly true, but only to a point. In addition to the traditional dollhouse, there are room boxes, vingettes, book nooks, and even she-sheds that have given a new twist to an old standby.
Scale Models
Once you widen your view and really start seeing small, you'll find there are inifinite possibilities. Rather than a house, how about a barn? A lighthouse? An art studio? A boat? An urban alley? A RV? Special effects for a movie? Really, anything goes!
miniaturization
Miniatures are not just about the boring four walls of a building, but about all the amazing architectural details that go into them -- windows, floors, bricks, tile, molding, stairs, cabinets, light fixtures, doors, cove ceilings -- everything that makes a building unique and noteworthy should be made small.
Fine Arts
Miniatures are really about the fine arts and craftsmanship. From wood working to pottery, blown glass to gardening, painting to sculpture, sewing and upholstery, and even furniture refinishing -- everything that's a skilled trade or talented hobby "full size" is exactly the same in the to-scale miniature world.
Scale Food and Baking
Along with building items there’s the creation of everything inside a structure. A very large subset of this is food (of course!). People are making entire restaurants full of food, not to mention fancy special event tables, bakeries, kitchens, and refrigerators. With polymer clay, food creation has become a mix of pottery, sculpture, and imagination. You may not cook in real life but you may be a five star chef in miniature!
Scale Animals and Pets
Many people believe a house is not a home without pet hair and this includes dollhouses. Mixing sculpture with fiber arts the making of scaled pets has really become something special. It’s even expanded into every pet imaginable. Parrots, ferrets, hamsters, polymer clay is even being used to create aquariums full of fish. Wild animals have not been ignored, either. Lions and tigers and bears (oh my!) can all be found to-scale.
You Have What it Takes! come get creative wth cms!
- I went to the sale/sale in November and was blown away by the exhibits. I decide to go to the next meeting and by the end of it I decided I had finally found "my people" who loved everything I already loved about miniatures as much as I did.★★★★★Sheri PCMS Member 2021With CMS I’ve tried things I never would have considered on my own. As a general rule I don’t like dolls but I love what I created in the doll workshop. With CMS there’s always something to learn and to try out!★★★★★Angela RCMS Member 2016I’ve been a member since the beginning and there’s always something new in the world of miniatures. Having miniatures as a hobby is the perfect way to be creative! You can try all kinds of things using a small amount of space (pun intended).★★★★★Dan ZCMS Lifetime Member
